An Explanation of our Doctors’ Qualifications

Medical Degree - MBBS, BM, MBChB, BMBCh. These are all equivalent medical degrees. All doctors study at university for 5 or 6 years to obtain a medical degree, the exact name of this depends on the university.

Additional Science degrees - BSc, MSc. These are university degrees awarded after 1-3 years of further study.

Postgraduate Qualifications - DRCOG, DFFP, CME. Diplomas awarded for studies in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Family Planning, and Medical Education respectively.

Membership of Medical Royal Colleges - MRCGP, MRCP. MRCGP is awarded for passing the membership exam of the Royal College of General Practitioners, and is the usual qualification allowing a doctor to practice as a GP. MRCP is the membership exam of the Royal College of Physicians, a qualification in General (Internal) medicine.

Note - The postnomial qualifications listed on this website show that the doctors passed the exams concerned, and do not necessarily imply ongoing membership of the colleges.

Registrars are fully qualified doctors who are specialising in General Practice after working for several years in hospitals.
